Hinesville Georgia - Things to Do, Events to See
Welcome to Hinesville Georgia
Hinesville, Georgia is a great place to visit. Already known as the home of Fort Stewart, the United States Army's 3rd Infantry Mechanized Division headquarters, Hinesville also plays host to the summer training grounds for the National Guard. But there is more to Hinesville than the military base.
Hinesville boasts a moderate climate year-round. Known as the “Big, Little City, Hinesville is a melding of old and new. Here you can catch a glimpse back at the Old South at the same time as you build for the future. The thriving downtown offers a cosmopolitan feel with dining that features German and Mexican cuisines mixing with the latest caffeinated beverages served along side homemade soups and sandwiches.
The shopping is great too with specialty shops that feature original art, popular collectibles, exquisite jewelery, formal and bridal wear and so much more. Beyond the ample shopping choices, Hinesville offers numerous cultural and historic sites, museums, nature trails and parks.
One highlight you'll want to see is the Old Liberty County Jail and Museum. Built around 1892, the interior of the jail is divided by a brisk wall into two sections housing (or drunk tank) and two cells downstairs and two cells and the upper part of the bull-pen upstairs. When it opened, city leaders boasted that the jail had "all the modern improvements and conveniences of a first class prison. Eighty years later it was condemned by Georgia Governor Lester Maddox as "a rotten, filthy rat hole." Open Monday through Friday, there is no admission fee and group tours are available upon request.
There are a number of festivals on tap each year and outdoor concerts make for a lovely night out during the summer months. Whether you visit for a day or choose to make it your home for a lifetime, you will love the Big, Little City of Hinesville.
